Do Government Workers Live Longer?

Did you know most states and municipalities assume their workers will live longer than private sector workers?

A report by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College took a look at the mortality of public sector workers vs those in the private sector. The report uses data from the National Longitudinal Mortality Study (NLMS) to analyze public versus private sector mortality.

When using the 11-year Mortality Rates for 55-64 Year Old Workers, the data supports the notion that public sector workers live longer. Public sector men ages 55-64 were 0.6 percentage points less likely to die within 11 years (i.e., by the time they were ages 66-75) than private sector men. For women, the gap was larger – 1.2 percentage points.

government-live-longer

Why do government employees seem to live longer than private sector workers? Education.

While this conclusion could be used to assume that government workers jobs are less stressful, less work, etc. The real cause is demographics. Public sector workers tend to have more education than private sector workers; more education means lower mortality. Once the data is adjusted to eliminate the difference in education levels, the rates of mortality between public and private sector workers are comparable.

Current Government Employment Statistics – June 2015

The latest employments statistics report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed government employment remained unchanged in June 2015, with little change at the federal, state, and local levels. Government employment has changed little over the past 12 months, with 55,000 government jobs added or an increase of 0.3 percent. In contrast, private sector employment rose by 2.5 percent during the same period.

Government Employment - BLS June 2015

Looking at overall employment activity, nonfarm employment increased by 223,000 in June. Employment gains occurred in professional and business services, healthcare, retail trade, financial activities, and transportation and warehousing.

Employment has increased by an average 221,000 per month over the past 3 months. Average hourly earnings for all employees on private, nonfarm payrolls were unchanged in June, following a 6-cent gain in May. Hourly earnings were up 2.0 percent over the year. In

How Citizens Participate in Local Government

Local governments are fortunate to have many citizens who volunteer their time and abilities to assist governments in delivering programs and essential government services. Volunteers save governments millions of dollars annually reducing the cost of services that governments provide because volunteers enable government to get more for each tax dollar collected.

Not only does government benefit through volunteers’ efforts, so do the volunteers. Volunteering results in new friendships and contacts, allows people to satisfy talents and abilities, helps develop new skills, and gives volunteers a sense of contributing to their government.

Volunteers are placed in positions to provide regular government services. Volunteers at government serve in administrative and operational positions. Members of advisory and policy-making boards, commissions, committees, and councils are administrative volunteers. Operational volunteers aid in developing programs and providing government service; for instance, acting as tour guides, docents, or clerks. These volunteers supplement the work of paid government employees.

These administrative volunteers are usually appointed by elected government bodies to serve as advisors to the council.

You may be asking yourself several questions like:

What are the benefits of being a volunteer?

A volunteer becomes an important part of government and works side-by-side delivering regular municipal services . Also, volunteers have an opportunity to meet civic and political leaders, as well as other citizens. The volunteer can gain job experience, earn recommendations for future employment, and save government tax dollars.

Are volunteer efforts tax deductible?

A volunteer may deduct certain out-of pocket expenses incurred while doing volunteer work, such as transportation and parking expenses. If special uniforms are required and are not provided by government, these are tax deductible also. However, if the volunteer is reimbursed by government for any expenses, deductions can be claimed only for expenses exceeding the amount of reimbursement.

How many hours is a volunteer asked to serve?

Government asks volunteers to commit three hours a week for three months. Government will be flexible in assigning the hours to be worked.

Are there any special qualifications for volunteering?

Volunteers in the administrative area need to be familiar with the subject which the board or commission applied for provides advice.
